The number of incidences of people grinding their teeth during the night has increased and it is thought to be caused the sharp economic downturn over the last couple of years say the medical experts. Hundreds of people are turning to dentists looking for help in treating the condition every single week which not only disturbs sleep but can even lead to people losing teeth. In these difficult economic times the last thing people need to do is to have to visit a dentist to have expensive dental treatment performed to correct it.
The condition of tooth grinding, or bruxism as it is sometimes called, is more often than not triggered by anxiety and researchers believe that people worrying about their financial troubles is the main cause of the increase in the tooth grinding phenomenon and the number of people seeking help for it. Sales of special mouthguards, which reduce the impact of teeth grinding and are worn at night to prevent teeth grinding in your sleep, have risen by 50% according to retailers.
When people clench and grind their teeth, the force they impact can be huge but they might not be aware of the damage they are causing. They can wear right through teeth or end up destroying fillings and crowns. Cases have been reported of patients who have ground through metal fillings in the space of just two weeks.
The symptoms of bruxism, which affects around 8-10% of people in the UK, can range from headaches and tiredness to acute pain in the jaw muscle. Over a period of time, people who suffer from tooth grinding can actually grind their way through the enamel in the teeth. This can lead to tooth breakage or even tooth loss which can in turn lead to expensive dental bills.
Although there is no specific cure for the condition, leading UK dentists recommend that people wear specially fitted mouth guards at night to prevent damage. Patients are also advised to adopt relaxation techniques and avoid consuming alcohol or caffeine before bedtime to reduce the risk of grinding.
