Green tea is a natural health booster for everyone, however there are two main camps when it comes to pregnant women. Some say that it’s healthy for drinking, yet others say that pregnant women should stay away from it. This debate is ongoing and there doesn’t seem to be an end to it, so let’s get a better understanding of green tea and its benefits and disadvantages during pregnancy.

Green tea is a natural immune booster, so it is quite advantageous to drink it when you’re pregnant. This keeps various diseases off along with unwanted infections. The problem that many pregnant women face is that they can have an increases in the levels of blood sugar and this can at times trigger gestation diabetes. Drinking this tea can keep the sugar levels in check which keeps the baby in the womb healthy.

In addition, during pregnancy women tend to eat more. This will in turn increase the cholesterol levels. Green tea is as well known suppressor of bad levels of cholesterol, so drinking it will help yet again. Furthermore, when you eat too much, you get indigestion which can be quite harmful for the baby. Green tea can easily help here as well.

Most of us are heavy coffee drinkers, and pregnant woman are no exception. We all like our regular caffeine fix. However as a pregnant woman, you can not consume too much caffeine, as it can seriously harm the baby. Excessive caffeine is known to have caused miscarriages or reduction in the weight of the baby when born. Green tea has also caffeine but in much smaller amounts. This will allow one to still feel the ‘kick’ of the caffeine without any adverse effects.

One thing that pregnant women should avoid is drinking it while they are in their first trimester due to the fact that it affects badly the enzyme controlling the production of folic acid. Once the trimester is over, however, pregnant women are safe and even encouraged to consume green tea to enhance their health and that of their own baby.
